Central Banks Shift Focus to Broader Financial Conditions
Major central banks have been shifting their focus towards broader financial conditions when describing monetary policy decisions. This shift is evident in recent statements from key officials, including Chairman Kevin Warsh and President Christine Lagarde.
In September, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates, with Chairman Warsh framing it as 'removing a dose of accommodation so that financial and credit conditions would be more consistent with [the Fed's] objectives.'
The European Central Bank also emphasized its assessment of financial and monetary conditions in its decision-making process. Meanwhile, Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda explicitly linked the policy rate path to financial conditions at the recent G20 summit.
