Chalmers Plays Blame Game as Australia Faces Interest Rate Hike
Australia is bracing for another rate hike as the Reserve Bank prepares to raise the official cash rate by 0.25% to 4.6%, its highest level in 15 years, according to Treasury predictions.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers attributed Australia's 'inflation challenge' to external factors, specifically the US-Iran conflict and its impact on global oil prices and supply chains, which he said has been 'absolutely disastrous' for Australian families.
Chalmers maintained that while there are other sources of inflation, decisions made overseas have exacerbated the issue, saying it's a fact that the war in the Middle East has worsened Australia's inflation challenge.
Opposition treasury spokesman Tim Wilson rejected Chalmers' assertion, arguing that public spending at all levels is the main driver of inflation and that the government needs to change its economic approach rather than relying on higher unemployment rates to curb inflation, as suggested by RBA governor Michele Bullock.
