Chalmers Under Fire from Within Labor Over Economic Messaging
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has faced criticism from within his own Labor party over the government's economic messaging.
The speculation comes amid a bruising week for the government, with inflation rising to 4 percent and interest rates reaching their highest level in 15 years at 4.6 percent.
RBA Governor Michele Bullock pointed to domestic capacity pressures, stronger-than-expected domestic spending and investment, weak productivity, and higher energy prices associated with the conflict in the Middle East as factors contributing to inflation.
Chalmers blamed the conflict for part of the problem while maintaining that the government was responsible for its part in fighting inflation.
Sources within Labor expressed concern over Chalmers' repeated message that 'people are doing it tough', suggesting that perhaps a new sales face is needed ahead of a potential cabinet reshuffle next year.
