Cheaper Rice Clouds Japan's Inflation Outlook

Japan's inflation outlook has become more complex as cheaper rice threatens to cool consumer inflation just as underlying price pressures remain firm.

Rice prices are expected to drop sharply from autumn after the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations in Niigata set its provisional payment for 2026-crop Koshihikari rice at 18,500 yen per 60 kilograms, down 38% from a year earlier.

The decline reflects a substantial easing in supply and demand, partly because large amounts of 2025-crop rice remain available. Cheaper rice could mask broader inflation pressure.
