China Boosts Yuan Globalization with Gold Trading and Reserves Expansion

China's ongoing gold-buying spree is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the yuan's global standing. Over the past two years, China has been acquiring gold monthly to narrow the gap with the U.S. in terms of gold reserves. This push aligns with Beijing's long-term goal of internationalizing the yuan, with Hong Kong playing a pivotal role as a trading hub for gold denominated in the Chinese currency.

Hong Kong is expanding its gold vault capacity from 150 tonnes to over 2,000 tonnes within the next three years, a move that could make it one of the world's largest gold trading centers. Analysts note that while the U.S. dollar remains dominant, China's gold purchases and Hong Kong's trading platform are steps toward supporting greater use of the yuan globally. Charles Chang of S&P Global Ratings highlighted that gold trading in yuan provides more channels for international transactions, enhancing the currency's credibility.

The U.S. holds the largest gold reserves at over 8,100 tonnes, while China has about one-third of that amount. Analysts like Hao Zhou of Guotai Junan International suggest that China's gold accumulation strengthens its financial system and reduces reliance on dollar-denominated assets. This trend is part of a broader effort by developing economies to diversify reserves and reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar.

China's gold ambitions extend beyond financial transactions to include control over major gold mines in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. This comprehensive approach underscores China's long-term commitment to gold, a trend that analysts believe will persist for years. Meanwhile, the U.S. Treasury Secretary has appointed Judy Shelton, a gold-standard supporter, as a senior advisor focused on China, highlighting the strategic importance of gold in global financial dynamics.
