China Central Bank Vows Support Amid Global Economic Woes
The People's Bank of China (PBOC) recently held a symposium with foreign financial institutions to discuss measures for further optimizing the business environment and advancing high-level opening-up of the financial sector.
PBOC Governor Pan Gongsheng stated that the central bank would effectively implement a moderately accommodative monetary policy, continue to promote high-level financial opening-up, refine policy support, steadily expand the two-way opening of financial markets, optimize cross-border payment services, and further facilitate the international use of the RMB.
In other news, Federal Reserve official Musalem warned that without further policy restraint, inflation could remain significantly above the 2% target in 18 months. He suggested that interest rates might need to rise further to curb demand- and supply-driven inflation; rate hikes should ideally be 'front-loaded and gradual' rather than 'delayed and aggressive.'
Bank of Canada Governor Macklem also weighed in, stating that policymakers do not want to be too slow to raise interest rates if inflationary pressures show signs of persistence. The risk of Canadian inflation remaining elevated is rising as the conflict in the Middle East drives up energy prices.
