China's Green Tech Dominance Creates Climate Action Dilemma
The University of Manchester's Sustainable Consumption Institute has published a report warning that trying to compete with China in green technologies could slow global climate action. According to the study, China's dominance in key areas such as batteries, electric vehicles, and solar power is helping to subsidize the transition to a low-carbon economy.
The report argues that China's large-scale support for green industries has made these technologies cheaper and more widely available, but its dominance is also making it difficult for European and US companies to compete. This creates a dilemma for governments seeking to decarbonise while protecting their own domestic industries.
Lead author Dr. James Jackson says, 'China's dominance of green technology presents a fundamental dilemma for governments. The world needs these technologies to decarbonise, but efforts to compete with China risk making the transition more expensive and more difficult.'
The report recommends that countries should focus on cooperation rather than competition, particularly where access to affordable green technologies is essential to meeting climate targets.
