Christchurch is experiencing a significant economic boost this Labour weekend, thanks to a surge in visitors drawn by favorable weather and a packed sports schedule. An estimated 10,000 out-of-towners have flocked to the city, contributing around $3.5 million to the local economy. This influx has also resulted in 17,000 visitor nights in local accommodation, according to ChristchurchNZ general manager of visitor economy Anne Newman.
The city has hosted a series of high-profile sporting events, including the Silver Ferns at Wolfbrook Arena and the Black Caps at Hagley Oval. Tonight’s Rugby League World Cup match between the Kiwis and the Cook Islands at Te Kaha stadium is the latest addition to the lineup, with the NPC final still to come on Monday. Newman highlighted Christchurch’s growing reputation as the sporting capital of New Zealand, noting that the city has been strategically planning for this moment for years.
Local businesses are reaping the benefits of the increased foot traffic. Indula Jayasundar, manager of Muse Hotel near Te Kaha stadium, reported fully booked rooms for the past few days. Hospitality NZ's Canterbury branch president Jeremy Stevens observed that the city’s recent infrastructure projects are finally paying off, attracting visitors from across the country.
