Ian Thomas, the chief executive of the City of London Corporation, has been named the UK's most influential Black Briton in the 2027 Black Powerlist awards. At 57, Thomas is the first Black person to lead the Square Mile's governing body in its over 900-year history. The City of London Corporation oversees the central financial district, including the City of London Police and vast open spaces like Epping Forest.
Thomas topped the list, which recognizes influential individuals of African and Caribbean heritage. The award body highlighted his 30 years of experience in public service. Other notable figures in the top ten include entrepreneurs Emma Grede and Steven Bartlett, as well as actor Sir Idris Elba. Comedian Sir Lenny Henry received a Lifetime Achievement award for co-founding Comic Relief, which has raised over £1.6bn since 1985.
Thomas reflected on his journey, stating he never imagined being recognized in this way. Born in Sheffield to Jamaican Windrush-generation parents, he credited his upbringing for instilling discipline and respect. Before his current role, he served as chief executive of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and was appointed a CBE in 2019 for transforming children's services in Rotherham.
The Black Powerlist, now in its 21st year, aims to inspire young people by showcasing achievable leadership roles. Michael Eboda, the list's publisher, emphasized its purpose in broadening horizons for future generations. Thomas replaces Afua Kyei, the Bank of England's chief financial officer, who topped last year's list.
