Collins Hints at Elevated Inflation Despite September Rate Increase
Boston Federal Reserve President Susan Collins recently expressed her support for last week's decision to raise the federal funds rate by 25 basis points. She warned that inflation could remain above the Fed's 2% target, indicating a hawkish signal and narrowing the outlook for rate relief.
Collins stated in a LinkedIn post that she now sees an increased likelihood of future scenarios where inflation remains notably above 2%. The federal funds rate target range has been raised to 3.75%-4.00%, breaking a five-meeting hold streak.
The labor market's strength was cited by Collins as a reason for the rate hike, with unemployment remaining low and conditions described as 'a bit stronger overall.' This suggests that monetary policy will focus on returning to price stability after five and a half years of too high inflation.
