Commerzbank's record-breaking first half of 2026 has been overshadowed by its takeover saga. The bank reported a €1.8 billion group profit, with operating income rising 14 percent to €2.7 billion.

Net interest income held steady at €4.1 billion despite recent rate cuts. Management continues to target a return on equity of roughly 12 percent for the full year.

The European Central Bank has signaled its willingness to approve UniCredit's bid for Commerzbank, but with conditions. The ECB demands a mitigation strategy and stricter oversight, describing the integration as 'challenging and long-lasting.'

UniCredit chief Andrea Orcel plans to cut Commerzbank's cost base by €1.3 billion while keeping the German unit operationally separate until 2029 or 2030.
