Cook Signals Possible Rate Hike as Inflation Concerns Mount

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has hinted that another interest-rate increase may be necessary to combat high inflation. In a recent speech in Anchorage, Alaska, Cook stated that she is 'prepared to act by raising rates' if needed. This comes after the Fed held rates unchanged last week with a 9-3 vote.

Cook's comments suggest that support for the pause could weaken quickly unless upcoming inflation data confirm that price pressures are continuing to ease. The June inflation slowdown, driven largely by lower energy prices, may not be enough to convince policymakers to maintain the current rate level.

The Fed will be watching whether the improvement continues across several months and spreads into more persistent categories such as services, housing, and wages. Cook warned that five years of above-target inflation increase the chance that these patterns become entrenched and harder for the Fed to reverse.
