Cooperman Sees Recession Looming Ahead
Billionaire investor Leon Cooperman has once again sounded the alarm on a potential recession. Speaking to CNBC, he pointed out that hotter US inflation could weigh on economic growth and lead to a downturn. He noted that this could occur as soon as next year.
Citing historical parallels with past market bubbles, including the Nifty Fifty era in the mid-1900s, Cooperman believes signs are pointing to an end of the current cycle. This could bring about turbulence in the markets, particularly for stocks tied to AI hype that is starting to fizzle out.
The Omega Advisors CEO emphasized that he thinks earnings estimates for the S&P 500 are mispriced. He pointed out that these estimates indicate year-over-year earnings growth of over 50% this quarter, a pace not seen since the pandemic stock boom. Cooperman's warning comes as most forecasters remain optimistic about AI and its returns on investment.
