CPI Rises Exceed Expectations, Fueling Pressure for Federal Reserve Rate Hike
The US Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.4% in August, exceeding expectations and adding to pressure on the Federal Reserve to tighten monetary policy at its upcoming meeting.
This increase was in line with the Dow Jones consensus forecast, but core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.3% in August after increasing 0.2% in July, exceeding economists' expectations of a 0.2% rise.
Economists are now looking at whether this acceleration is a temporary supply shock or evidence that broader price pressures are becoming entrenched.
