Crédit Agricole Sees Stronger Rand Despite Market Expectations of Rate Hikes
Analysts at Crédit Agricole predict a recovery in the South African Rand against the US Dollar by December 2026. According to their forecasts, the USD/ZAR exchange rate will drop from its current level near 16.65 to 15.50 by December of that year.
This forecast is significant because it implies a decline of approximately 6.9% in the pair. A lower USD/ZAR rate means a stronger Rand, as fewer Rand are needed to buy one Dollar.
The analysts at Crédit Agricole argue that markets expect too many further interest-rate increases from the South African Reserve Bank (SARB). However, they give greater weight to the central bank's baseline projection for broadly stable rates through year-end and to weakness in domestic activity.
