Crude Oil Takes Center Stage as EUR/USD and USD/JPY Traders Face Identity Crisis
The EUR/USD and USD/JPY pairs are experiencing an 'identity crisis' due to their strong correlation with crude oil futures, US yields, and broader FX movements.
A recent analysis by LSEG found that Brent crude has a strengthening relationship with the US yield curve, particularly in the belly and long end. This is evident across five, 10, and 20-session windows.
The EUR/USD pair remains tied to the hip with movements across the US yield curve, making it vulnerable to changes in oil prices and interest rates. The technical picture still favors selling strength and downside breaks, but the lack of a clear escalation in the Middle East conflict raises questions about the fundamental catalyst required for a sustained break lower.
The USD/JPY pair is also experiencing whipsaw movement due to conflicting forces between higher energy and Treasury yields, as well as warnings from Japanese authorities about intervention. The 158.00-158.50 level remains key for USD/JPY traders, with potential intervention activity on the next occasion if the pair rallies back towards this zone.
