Cuba's Informal Currency Market Sees Mixed Results as Dollar Remains Strong
The informal currency market in Cuba closed its session on Sunday, August 9, 2026, with mixed results. The US dollar remained stable at 673 Cuban pesos (CUP), marking the seventh day in a row it has held this value. In contrast, the euro declined for the second consecutive day, closing at 778 CUP.
The MLC also saw a decline, dropping to around 446 CUP due to low trading volume. The dollar's stability is notable, having fluctuated between 655 and 675 pesos in the past month. However, its value has increased by 10 pesos compared to 30 days ago.
The euro, on the other hand, has accumulated a decrease of 10 pesos over the week, despite gaining 20.5 pesos compared to a month ago. The MLC's decline and low trading volume necessitate caution in its valuation.
The gap between the official exchange rate and the informal market remains significant, with the dollar being valued at 673 CUP and the euro at 778 CUP. This disconnect highlights the challenges faced by Cubans in accessing foreign currency.
