Cuba's Informal Market Sees Dollar and Euro Surge Amid Inflation
The informal currency market in Cuba has concluded its trading session on September 20, 2026, with both the US dollar and euro experiencing a significant increase against the Cuban peso.
The US dollar ended the day at 713 Cuban pesos (CUP), up 4 pesos from the previous session's closing price of 709 CUP. This marks a 2.7% rise over the past week, which saw the dollar increase by 19 pesos from 694 CUP seven days ago.
The euro also performed well, closing at 815 CUP and gaining 10 pesos from the previous session's value of 805 CUP. Over the same period, the euro has climbed by 3.1% and surged 9% over the past month, reaching its highest level in the last 30 days.
The Cuban peso continues to lose ground against these major currencies, with a significant gap between official and informal exchange rates persisting. The CiberCuba Exchange Rate index, which tracks the informal market's dynamics, highlights the stark contrast between the two.
