Deutsche Bank and Santander Kickstart Blockchain Settlement System
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched its new blockchain settlement system, Pontes, which enables banks to settle tokenized securities trades directly in central bank money. Thirteen institutions, including Deutsche Bank and Santander, are already running real transactions on the platform.
Pontes bridges private distributed ledger networks with TARGET, the Eurosystem's existing settlement backbone, allowing for seamless integration and reducing counterparty risk. This marks a significant step towards tokenized finance and provides a wholesale alternative to stablecoins.
The ECB has mapped out its plans for Pontes' expansion, aiming to increase operating hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CET on business days to continuous availability by mid-2028, with full implementation targeted for 2028. The central bank will also invest in tokenized securities through Pontes, starting with euro-denominated bonds.
The launch of Pontes addresses the long-standing issue of settling cash trades in tokenized finance, providing a risk-free asset to bridge private blockchains and the traditional financial system.
