Dewi Sukarno fined 200,000 yen for assaulting agency staff
Japanese television personality Dewi Sukarno, better known as Dewi Fujin, was fined 200,000 yen by the Tokyo District Court on October 6 after being found guilty of assaulting two women associated with her agency. The 86-year-old was accused of throwing objects, including a champagne glass, at a female employee in a Tokyo restaurant in February 2025, and assaulting her former manager at an animal hospital in October 2025. The latter incident reportedly involved repeated strikes to the chest and abdomen, as well as kicking.
During the trial, Sukarno's testimony shifted between admitting guilt and denying the allegations. At her first hearing in June, she expressed remorse, admitting to her actions and comparing herself to an "instant water heater." However, by September, she denied throwing the champagne glass or assaulting anyone, claiming she did not remember the incidents. Prosecutors argued that her lack of consistent remorse warranted the fine, while her defense cited the social consequences she had already faced, such as losing television appearances.
The court rejected Sukarno's denial, finding her testimony vague and inconsistent with evidence like glass fragments at the scene. It described her actions as dangerous and short-sighted, with no justification for leniency. After the ruling, Sukarno bowed to her lawyer before leaving the courtroom.
