Dewi Sukarno fined for assaulting former assistant and manager
An 86-year-old TV personality, Dewi Sukarno, has been fined 200,000 yen (approximately $1,300) for assaulting her former assistant and manager. The Tokyo District Court ruled on Tuesday that Dewi's actions, including throwing a champagne glass, were dangerous and warranted no leniency. Judge Toshikazu Ishida emphasized that video evidence confirmed the assaults, despite Dewi's claims of innocence.
The incidents occurred in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward. On February 13, Dewi threw a champagne glass at her assistant at a restaurant. Later, on October 28, she punched and kicked her manager at an animal hospital. The court rejected her defense, stating there were no extenuating circumstances. Prosecutors had requested the same fine amount.
Dewi, widely known as Madame Dewi in Japan, expressed remorse during the trial. Her defense lawyer noted that she suffered financial losses of around 90 million yen due to canceled appearances following the incidents. Dewi, a former leader of a political organization advocating for animal welfare, was once married to Indonesia's first president, Sukarno.
