Dhingra Warns Inflation Pressures from Iran War Will Emerge This Winter
Bank of England policymaker Swati Dhingra recently shared insights on how the ongoing Iran war is affecting long-term inflation pressures in Britain. Speaking at a conference hosted by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, Dhingra noted that while energy costs surged significantly in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the current situation is different.
'I think the timing issue here is that we’re going to know from the winter energy pricing what happens there, we’re going to know much more about wage settlements and where they end up at, and financial pricing already underway,' Dhingra said. She emphasized that key indicators will emerge over the coming months.
Dhingra's comments come as Britain's labor market has weakened since the 2022 energy cost surge. The policymaker previously supported reducing borrowing costs when the Bank of England was implementing rate cuts, but in recent decisions, she has aligned with the majority of the Monetary Policy Committee in maintaining current interest rates.
