Digital Asset Flows Track Fed, Not Conviction: Blockchain Equities See Inflows
Digital asset flows have been closely tied to Federal Reserve decisions, rather than investor conviction in the asset class. In recent weeks, assets such as Bitcoin saw significant price swings following rate hike expectations. On September 4, Kevin Warsh spoke out against a potential rate hike, with his views contradicting those of some other committee members.
Warsh's comments sparked an immediate reaction, with digital asset ETFs and ETPs shedding around $100 million within hours. However, the following four sessions saw a total influx of $1 billion into these funds, indicating that investors did not abandon the asset class in response to Warsh's views.
The current market dynamics suggest that trust in US government paper is eroding, pushing capital towards assets that cannot be issued by the state. Blockchain-linked equities have seen increased inflows, pulling in around $27 million on the week and over $100 million on the month. This divergence from cooling spot-linked flows suggests that capital is moving within the theme rather than out of it.
The market is currently range-bound, with investors advised to position themselves for a possible breakout above $80,000. Two key dates will determine the direction of the market: August inflation data and the September rate decision. The outcome of these events will reveal whose reading of the mandate prevails and whether the economy is cooling or not.
