Digital Finance's Hidden Foundation: Public Money Takes Center Stage
The concept of digital finance is evolving rapidly, but it's not about replacing central banks with private entities. In fact, the future of digital money relies heavily on public money, particularly in its tokenized form.
According to a recent initiative by the European Central Bank (ECB), Pontes, tokenization and distributed ledgers can transform asset issuance, trading, and management. However, for this transformation to happen, investors need a safe settlement asset, which currently doesn't exist on distributed-ledger technology.
The types of money available on such platforms, like stablecoins and Bitcoin, carry intrinsic credit risk or are subject to wild price swings. To address this issue, the ECB aims to create conditions for safer, more efficient, and resilient markets by providing central bank money in tokenized form.
