Dollar Extends Gains Amid Hawkish Fed Comments and Oil Price Volatility
The US dollar has continued its upward trend despite recent declines in oil prices. The greenback extended its gains on Tuesday, fueled by hawkish comments from Federal Reserve officials and growing expectations of interest rate differentials between the US and other countries.
Oil prices had been falling for five consecutive days before stabilizing in the morning session. However, this stability was short-lived, as oil bounced back later in the day, putting pressure on currencies reliant on energy imports, such as the euro, pound, Swiss franc, and Japanese yen.
The dollar's strength is attributed to hawkish FedSpeak, with several officials warning of sticky inflation due to supply shocks, strong spending, and AI-related investment. This has led to expectations that the US will maintain a restrictive monetary policy, widening the interest rate differential between the US and countries like Switzerland and Japan.
The USD/JPY forecast remains bullish, with technical analysis suggesting a breakout above 158.00-158.50 could lead to a rally towards summer highs. However, intervention from Japanese authorities is possible as the pair approaches the 160.00 level.
