Dollar Faces Bleak August Amid Fed Reluctance and Currency Interventions

The US Dollar's prospects for August appear uncertain due to several factors, according to DBS Group Research economist Philip Wee. The Dollar suffered a significant decline at the end of July and its trajectory looks bleak in the coming month.

Wee highlights the Federal Reserve under Chairman Kevin Warsh as a factor contributing to the Dollar's weakness. In contrast to expectations of a rate hike, the Fed focused on institutional reforms during the July 28-29 FOMC meeting, particularly scaling back forward guidance.

The resulting steepening in the US Treasury yield curve indicates fading confidence in US monetary policy. Additionally, coordinated US-Japan currency intervention in USD/JPY has kept the Dollar vulnerable.
