Dollar Holds Firm as Inflationary Pressures Mount Against Euro and Pound
The US Dollar has maintained its strength in recent times, supported by elevated U.S. inflation and frequent issuance of U.S. Treasuries. The 10-year U.S. Treasury note yield has surpassed 3.6%, putting a lid on bonds and bolstering the greenback's value.
Inflationary pressures have also affected major currencies like the euro, as energy costs rise due to the conflict in Iran. This has contributed to the euro's decline against the dollar. The European Central Bank is facing challenges in managing inflation, while France's bond yields have increased by 115 basis points compared to Germany.
The pound sterling also faces headwinds, with Britain's budget deficit remaining large despite recent government efforts to rein in spending. Data from the Bank of England indicates that unsecured consumer lending picked up in August, raising concerns about the health of the UK labor market and further complicating the central bank's efforts to control inflation.
The dollar's performance against major currencies will be closely watched as key economic indicators are released this Friday, including the U.S. PCE report and jobs data.
