Dollar Holds Steady as Euro Dips Slightly in Cuba's Informal Market
The informal currency market in Cuba continues to see fluctuations, with the US dollar holding steady and the euro experiencing a slight decrease. As of Wednesday morning, the US dollar remains around 673 Cuban pesos (CUP), while the euro has dropped by 2.5 CUP, settling at 785 CUP.
The Convertible Peso (MLC) is trading at approximately 478 CUP, but its value is considered a rough estimate due to limited transactions and data availability.
The dollar's stability in Cuba's informal market can be attributed to consistent demand amidst a structural shortage of currency. The official exchange rate from the Central Bank of Cuba is significantly lower than the values prevalent in the informal market, highlighting the persistent shortage of currency in the state banking system.
The gap between the informal and official currency rates exacerbates economic challenges in Cuba, affecting internal prices and diminishing purchasing power. In a setting of ongoing inflation, low state wages, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, any fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts the country's economic landscape.
