Dollar Index Surges to Six-Week High After Hawkish Fed Hike
The US dollar index surged to a six-week high after the Federal Reserve's hawkish rate hike, signaling further tightening in the economy. The Fed raised interest rates for the first time since July 2023, and its forecast indicates another rate hike this year. However, despite the near-term strength of the dollar, analysts believe that the broader US dollar rebound is corrective and may be nearing its peak.
The Fed's decision to hike rates was in line with expectations, but the market is still cautious about further tightening next year. The inflation outlook remains elevated due to high crude oil prices, which has tempered bets on an imminent interest rate hike by other central banks.
As a result of the Fed's actions, the US dollar index rose 0.7%, while EUR/USD and GBP/USD fell due to the hawkish stance. The Swiss franc was the weakest major currency, with USD/CHF rising 0.8% to its highest level since May 2025.
Analysts believe that the dollar's rally may be limited in the long term, as the Fed is not overly hawkish despite the rate hike. Price action on the weekly chart suggests a corrective rally from the January low, and momentum could realign with the bearish move that began in January 2025.
