Dollar Plunges as Yen Jumps Amid Shifting Rate Bets and Inflation Fears
The dollar declined by 0.7% on the week, its worst performance in September, as mixed signals from the Federal Reserve kept traders uncertain about its next move.
This uncertainty came ahead of a crucial inflation report due next week, which could solidify expectations for the Fed's decision on interest rates and subsequently impact the dollar's value.
The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index closed the week lower despite paring some losses on Friday after a stronger-than-expected jobs report. This jobs data revived bets on a quarter-point rate hike later this month, with traders pricing in around a 60% chance of an increase.
In addition to the dollar's decline, the yen surged by about 2.4% against the US currency, its best performance since July. Expectations that the Bank of Japan may raise its benchmark rate by a quarter point this month and possibly more in the future fueled this rally.
