Rwanda Diversifies Debt Portfolio with Addition of Japanese Yen
The government of Rwanda is diversifying its debt portfolio by adding the Japanese yen to its mix. This move follows the country's efforts to manage foreign exchange risks and reduce dependence on traditional reserve currencies like the US dollar.
According to a statement, Rwanda aims to increase its holdings in non-traditional reserve currencies as part of its overall strategy for economic diversification. The introduction of yen-denominated bonds will allow the government to tap into new sources of funding and reduce reliance on traditional markets.
Alice Umutesi, an economist with the central bank, noted that Rwanda's decision to add Japanese yen to its debt portfolio reflects a growing trend among emerging economies seeking to mitigate exchange rate risks. The country is also exploring other avenues for diversification, including investments in infrastructure and innovation.
