Dollar Rebounds from Record Low, But Colón Could Regain Ground by Year-End
The US dollar rebounded from its record low against the Costa Rican colón, but experts warn that the colón could regain ground by year-end. On the Foreign Currency Market (Monex), the dollar closed at ₡454.70 on Friday, September 25, up ₡6.92 from ₡447.78 a week earlier. This marks its highest close since June 29.
The Central Bank of Costa Rica's reference rate for Saturday was ₡450.38 to buy and ₡455.60 to sell. Trading was lighter during the rebound, with only $161.06 million changing hands on Monex over five sessions, compared to $195.97 million in four sessions the previous week.
Some experts believe that the dollar could face renewed downward pressure in the final months of 2026 due to extra foreign currency entering the market from aguinaldo payments and holiday purchases. Federico Quesada Chaves, director of the School of Administrative Sciences at UNED, said this is a possible scenario rather than a certain decline.
