Dollar Steady as Market Awaits US Inflation Data and Jackson Hole Speech
The US dollar remained relatively steady in Asian trading on Wednesday, despite some minor gains against various currencies. The currency is being closely watched ahead of the release of US inflation data later in the day, which will set the tone for the upcoming Jackson Hole symposium.
Analysts from Standard Chartered warned that the dollar may suffer in the short term due to its intervention strategy, which they believe may encourage more appetite for carry trades. This could lead to further weakness in the currency.
In contrast, the Australian dollar gained 0.3% to $0.7183, reaching a three-month high following data that showed a quicker-than-expected rise in the trimmed-mean CPI gauge. This has increased the likelihood of another rate hike from the Reserve Bank of Australia in the coming months.
The US personal consumption expenditures (PCE) data for July will be closely watched, along with Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh's keynote speech at Jackson Hole on Friday. His speech is expected to provide greater clarity on the Federal Reserve's reaction function without abandoning its preference for less forward guidance.
