Dollar steady as markets watch for Fed rate hike signals
The US dollar maintained its losses on Wednesday as markets shifted focus to the upcoming release of Federal Reserve minutes and speeches from policymakers. Investors are seeking clues about the possibility of a future rate hike. The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of currencies, edged up slightly to 101.94 after a decline in the previous session.
The euro experienced its largest gain in seven weeks during the prior session, driven by a drop in French bond yields following the presidential frontrunner's plans to reduce spending. Meanwhile, the yen weakened despite a Bank of Japan board member's support for interest rate increases. The Fed is set to release the minutes from its September 15-16 policy meeting, where it raised interest rates to combat inflation.
Comments from Fed officials have been less hawkish recently, following weaker-than-expected PCE and jobs data. Gavin Friend, a senior markets strategist at National Australia Bank, noted that the urgency for rate hikes has diminished after these reports. The dollar index rose 0.03% to 101.94, while the euro dipped 0.08% to US$1.1249.
In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin fell 0.22% to US$85,438.59, and ether declined 0.12% to US$2,695.22. The Japanese yen weakened 0.19% against the dollar to 158.43 per dollar, and sterling dipped 0.08% to US$1.3262. The Australian dollar and the kiwi also saw slight declines against the greenback.
