Dollar Surges as Euro Hits 2025 Low Amid US Growth and European Debt Concerns
The US dollar has reached near-yearly highs against the euro due to strong economic growth and higher interest rates in the United States. The greenback is up nearly 2.5% versus the euro this month, with the euro briefly hitting $1.1312 on Tuesday.
This rise in the dollar's value comes as Europe faces its own set of challenges, including energy-price swings and debt jitters. Benchmark European gas prices have jumped to their highest since 2022, while French assets have looked strained due to debt worries and political gridlock.
Options markets are also reflecting this unease, with a euro options skew that has tilted towards protection against further declines. This means traders are paying more for euro downside hedges, which can make it more expensive for euro-based investors and companies to hedge their US-dollar exposure back into euros.
