Dollar Surges as Stocks Rally, Euro Suffers from Dollar Strength
The US dollar index rose to a one-week high today and is up by 0.01%. The strength of the dollar was supported by lower-than-expected weekly jobless claims, which fell by 4,000 to 203,000. This suggests a stronger labor market than anticipated.
Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid's hawkish comments also contributed to the dollar's rise. He stated that current Fed policy is not restrictive and that interest rates might be accommodative on the short end. However, the dollar gave up most of its gains as stocks rallied, reducing liquidity demand for the greenback.
The euro fell to a one-week low against the dollar today, weighed down by the dollar's strength and concerns about an escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war. On the other hand, a stronger-than-expected increase in German consumer confidence helped limit losses in the euro.
