Dollar Surges on Hawkish Fed Hike, but Broader Rebound May Be Limited
The US dollar has surged to its highest level in six weeks after the Federal Reserve delivered a hawkish rate hike, signaling further tightening this year. The dollar index rose 0.7% and is now above the 100 handle, while EUR/USD fell to a 34-day low.
Despite the near-term strength of the dollar, some analysts believe that the broader rebound may be corrective, with the year's high already in place. The Fed funds outlook was upgraded to 4.1%, indicating another rate hike this year, and core PCE inflation for 2026 was increased to 3.4% from 3.3%.
While markets are cautiously pricing further tightening next year, some uncertainty remains regarding the Fed's future moves. The growth outlook was nudged higher, while unemployment was revised lower for 2027, providing subtle but hawkish signals within the projections.
