Dollar Surges on Strong US Data, Euro and Sterling Weaken
The US dollar has strengthened as a result of strong economic data from the United States. The latest CME Group data indicates that there is now a 66% chance of a 75 basis point interest rate hike in October, up from earlier predictions of a 50 basis point increase.
Federal Reserve officials, including Governor Barr, reiterated their commitment to further rate increases to combat inflation, which currently exceeds the Fed's target of 2%. The European Central Bank (ECB) hiked rates last month but has signaled no strong preference for additional rate hikes.
The euro and sterling are expected to weaken against the dollar as a result. While the ECB is not planning further rate hikes, falling energy prices could lead to an easing of inflation across Europe and Britain, potentially impacting interest rates set by their central banks.
