Dollar Surges to New Record in Cuba's Informal Market
The informal market in Cuba is seeing significant fluctuations in exchange rates for major currencies. As of Saturday, September 19, 2026, the US dollar is trading at an average of 708 Cuban pesos (CUP), a 5-peso increase from the previous day's rate. This represents a 15-peso gain over the past week and a 45-peso increase compared to 30 days ago.
The euro has also seen significant gains, with its value rising by 2 pesos from the previous session to reach an average of 805 CUP. Over the past week, it has increased by 17.5 pesos from 787 CUP, and over the past month, it has gained 54.5 pesos compared to 750 CUP.
The MLC (Moneda Libremente Convertible) is trading at around 492 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a significant increase of 37.5 pesos (+8.3%) compared to the previous day's rate, making it the currency with the highest percentage change among the three. The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba remains well below the values seen in the informal market, reflecting ongoing shortages of foreign currency and high demand for dollars and euros from the population.
