Dollar Surges to Record High in Cuba, Minimum Wage Worth Less Than Five Dollars
The value of the US dollar has surged to 780 Cuban pesos (CUP) in Cuba's informal market, highlighting the stark reality of the nation's lowest incomes when measured against a currency that significantly influences prices and imports.
Cuba's official minimum wage of 3,210 CUP per month is now equivalent to approximately $4.12 at this exchange rate, while retirees receiving the minimum pension for age or disability, recently raised to 3,056 CUP, find their income reduced to around $3.92 per month.
These figures are based on the closing rate from CiberCuba's Currency Exchange on October 2 and do not imply that salaries or pensions are paid or exchangeable at this rate officially.
The rapid devaluation of the peso against the dollar continues to diminish the value of Cuba's minimum wage in foreign currency terms, making it difficult for Cubans to afford basic goods.
