The US dollar has weakened sharply against the Japanese yen after market interventions by both countries. The exchange rate dropped from over 163 yen to below 160 yen, a significant change in just a few days.

US President Donald Trump confirmed that the US had intervened in markets to help Japan stabilize its currency. He said it was a 'signal of friendship' and also beneficial for the world economy.

The Japanese finance minister, Satsuki Katayama, also confirmed the intervention, stating that it was done to counter excessive volatility in the yen's value against the dollar.
