Dollar Weakness Ahead of Rate Decisions: BoE and Fed in Focus
The GBP/USD and EUR/USD markets are experiencing mixed results ahead of key rate decisions from the Bank of England (BoE) and the Federal Reserve. The UK's inflation rate rose to 3.1% year-on-year in August, exceeding expectations but remaining within manageable levels for the BoE. This has kept expectations for BoE rate hikes unchanged, with four rate increases predicted over the next 12 months.
The GBP/USD is trading flat despite U.S. dollar weakness ahead of the Federal Reserve's rate decision, where a 25-basis-point hike is almost fully priced in. The focus will be on whether the dot plot and projections validate expectations for another rate increase this year. In contrast, the EUR/USD has broken down below its rising channel, with sellers hopeful of further downside.
The BoE's meeting later this week is expected to leave rates unchanged, as a weak labor market helps contain price pressures. However, concerns are growing about new risks such as rising food prices due to challenging domestic weather and the impact of Super El Niño. This may make it increasingly difficult for the BoE to maintain its current stance.
