Dutch Central Bank Moves 86 Tons of Gold to London Amid Geopolitical Unrest
The Dutch central bank has made significant moves to strengthen its crisis preparedness by transferring gold from North America to London. Over the past six months, the bank moved 86 metric tons of gold, which accounts for 27.5% of its previously held gold in New York and Ottawa. This strategic decision was taken amid rising geopolitical tensions.
DNB President Olaf Sleijpen stated that there is a need to 'strengthen our resilience and preparedness', although the central bank does not expect to use its reserves. The gold stored with the Bank of England is considered the world's most easily tradable, making it readily available in crisis situations.
The transfer involved selling about 59 tons of gold in New York and buying gold that meets the Bank of England's market standards. An additional 27 tons were physically moved from North America to the Netherlands, while an equivalent amount meeting BoE standards was transferred from the Dutch vault in Zeist to London.
