Eastern Canada Business Leaders Push for Single Economy to Boost Growth
A group of business leaders in Eastern Canada is calling for the creation of a 'single economy' between the Atlantic provinces to boost economic growth and competitiveness. The Atlantic Economic Panel, made up of seven executives and entrepreneurs, released a report that outlines recommendations to transform the region's economy by 2035.
The panel's chairman, Don Mills, said that Atlantic Canada's gross domestic product growth has underperformed compared to the national GDP for three decades, with a one-per-cent annual gap. He emphasized that the report is not about potential but about taking action to achieve economic transformation.
The panel recommends creating a 'One Atlantic Canada' agenda to bring the provinces together as one economy, while maintaining their own governments. This would involve removing trade and labour mobility barriers, presenting major investment opportunities through a single regional platform, and delivering half of all infrastructure projects through regional partnerships.
