Eastern Canada Leaders Push for Unified Economy
A group of business leaders in Eastern Canada is calling for the creation of a 'single economy' between Atlantic provinces to boost prosperity and growth.
The Atlantic Economic Panel, composed of seven well-known executives and entrepreneurs, has released a report outlining seven recommendations to transform the region's economy by 2035.
The report highlights low productivity, labor shortages, and complex regulations as major challenges facing Atlantic Canada's economy. To address these issues, the panel advocates for the creation of a 'One Atlantic Canada' agenda, which would bring the provinces together to function as one economy while maintaining their own governments.
The plan includes removing trade and labor mobility barriers, presenting investment opportunities through a single regional platform, and delivering at least half of major infrastructure projects through regional partnerships. Additionally, an integrated electricity system managed by a region-wide independent operator is proposed, requiring $25 billion in infrastructure investment.
