British Columbia Premier David Eby reaffirmed his commitment to banning crude oil tankers on the North Coast during a visit to Prince Rupert, where he highlighted the benefits of this decision for local communities and the environment. Eby appeared at the Crest Hotel Convention Centre with other provincial leaders, Coastal First Nations leaders, and local elected officials to discuss the Canada, British Columbia Cooperative Prosperity Agreement.

This agreement sets out a long-term plan to strengthen British Columbia's economy through investments in various sectors, including ports, critical minerals, liquefied natural gas (LNG), clean electricity, transportation infrastructure, and workforce development. Northwest B.C. is identified as a strategic economic region under this agreement, with commitments to expanding the ports of Prince Rupert and Stewart, supporting major LNG developments, investing in the North Coast Transmission Line, and advancing critical mineral projects.

Eby emphasized that the ban on crude oil tankers allows northwest B.C. communities to focus on economic growth while protecting one of Canada's most ecologically significant coastlines. He noted that these communities have built an economy worth more than $3 billion annually, which depends on protecting the natural environment.

Local leaders welcomed the reaffirmation of the tanker ban, with Prince Rupert mayor Herb Pond stating that it provides certainty for the city to focus on managing its unprecedented growth. First Nations leaders celebrated this decision as a result of decades-long efforts to protect the North Coast.
