The European Central Bank (ECB) aims to ensure that digital euros are widely usable from the moment they are issued. According to a presentation reviewed by Bloomberg, the ECB envisions consumers being able to use the digital currency in online shops, some physical stores, and for peer-to-peer payments right from the start. The Eurosystem, which includes the ECB and national central banks, sees value in offering all three use cases in the first issuance, expected in the second half of 2029.
The presentation, dated October 2, 2023, emphasizes that transactions should be possible both online and offline for physical stores and peer-to-peer payments. This approach is designed to maximize the utility of the digital euro from its launch, ensuring it can be integrated seamlessly into daily financial activities.
