ECB Blames Consumer Confidence for Euro Area Consumption Decline

The European Central Bank (ECB) has identified a crisis of confidence as the primary reason for the decline in consumer demand in the euro area following the outbreak of the war in the Middle East. According to an article published by the ECB, the decrease in discretionary spending is largely due to households choosing to delay their purchases despite not experiencing budget constraints.

The study signed by economists Neus Dausà i Noguera, Maria Dimou, and Omiros Kouvavas found that the cooling of nominal consumption in the region is largely attributed to households postponing their expenditures due to increased uncertainty. The authors point out that 'the confidence channel is particularly strong in the case of major disturbances that are perceived as such by consumers,' emphasizing that the loss of confidence tends to exert a more intense and rapid effect on consumption.

The report warns that if the recent rebound in consumer confidence is temporary, new obstacles to demand could arise, potentially negatively affecting the underlying dynamism of consumption. However, it also notes that part of the deferred discretionary consumption could be reactivated if tensions decrease and confidence recovers.
