Trade War Hits Home in Michigan

The town of Sault Ste. Marie on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has seen its economy suffer due to the ongoing trade war between the US and Canada. The International Bridge Walk, a annual event that brings together residents from both sides of the border, took place in late June with nearly 1,100 people attending. However, traffic over the bridge is down significantly, with a 24% drop in crossings last year compared to 2024. This has resulted in an estimated loss of $82.9 million for the local economy.

President Donald Trump's administration has imposed additional tariffs on Canadian products, citing 'Canada's discriminatory treatment of American products'. However, experts say that Canadians are boycotting the US due to its approach towards non-citizens and the decline in their purchasing power. The drop in traffic is having a ripple effect on local businesses, with many reporting significant losses.

Michigan state Sen. John Damoose said that the deterioration of relations between Canada and the US has had a devastating impact on his constituents. He remembered Canadians crossing the Sault bridge to help Michiganders repair the electrical grid after a brutal ice storm last year.
