ECB Boosts Euro's Global Role with Expanded Swap Lines
The European Central Bank (ECB) is expanding its euro swap lines to foreign central banks in an effort to support the global use of the euro and bolster its crisis backstop capabilities.
This move follows concerns that the US Federal Reserve may reduce its own swap lines, which could lead to a reduction in international liquidity support for euros. The ECB has already established similar arrangements with the US Federal Reserve and several other major central banks.
ECB President Christine Lagarde announced plans to expand euro swap lines to foreign central banks, saying that the arrangements should be more responsive to securing a sovereign euro area and a strong euro.
